Dr. Amanda Zerkel

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine – Maryland Heights

Dr. Amanda Zerkel

Dr. Zerkel was raised on a small farm near Greenville, Illinois. She developed an interest in animal handling and husbandry at an early age by taking care of a multitude of creatures on her family's farm. She began volunteering for a local veterinary clinic at age 12.

She completed her undergraduate studies at Truman State University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in biology in 2009. Dr. Zerkel attended the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine and graduated with her doctorate in veterinary medicine in 2013. For three years, Dr. Zerkel worked at a small animal practice in Las Vegas, Nevada. Her professional areas of interest are preventive medicine, soft tissue surgery, endoscopy, and internal medicine.

Dr. Zerkel is enjoying being back in the St. Louis near her family and friends and is excited to have joined the Animal Medical Center of Mid-America team! Dr. Zerkel chose a career in veterinary medicine because it requires a lifelong commitment to learning and the application of science to improve the health and welling of animals and our community through education. This organization (AMCMA) provides her a unique opportunity to serve both client owned and shelter animals.

In her free time, Dr. Zerkel loves spending her time with her family and friends, flower and vegetable gardening, losing herself in the beauty of nature on hikes, tending to her freshwater aquarium, exploring new recipes in her kitchen, and taking a trip to the library to discover a new book. She has a 20-gallon planted freshwater aquarium with a number of fish and invertebrates, a cantankerous yet lovable 17-year-old Chihuahua named Jack, and an inquisitive and independent cat named Felix.
